CHICAGO, Dec. 9 /Standard Newswire/ -- Dr. Jessica Davis, an African American Democrat and 2007 Mayoral Candidate in Carbondale, Illinois, submitted a letter of interest in the open Senate seat to Governor Blagojevich on November 12, 2008. Dr. Davis states her reaction to the arrest of the Governor:
"This day marks a sad page in the history of Illinois and this nation if these charges are upheld. Elected leadership is at the heart of a democracy. When leadership is abused as discussed in the FBI affidavit, the American people suffer the repercussions. The people of Illinois deserve better."
"As we try to move forward in the midst of the challenging days ahead, I hope my credentials and others who have expressed credible interest in serving the people of Illinois in the Senate receive full consideration." Dr. Davis again states her reasons for her interest:
"When I ran for Mayor, many encouraged me to move beyond local politics and run statewide given my platform for change. I told them that I would consider it if the opportunity presented itself and I felt I could make a contribution to the people of Illinois.
"I believe in a very similar way to President-elect Obama that we represent a new generation of leadership. We represent leaders that have remained connected to the people we serve. I spent the last year serving as a national political commentator encouraging Americans to challenge the disconnection of their local and national leaders. I would like to think that I made a difference.
"I made a commitment to Illinois by purchasing a home here. I am proud to contribute to the quality of life in Carbondale by being a property taxpayer. I am also proud to be a small business owner in Illinois. I have a public relations office in downtown Chicago."
In 2008, Dr. Davis was appointed the Dean of Students and Professor of Ethics and Public Policy at New Brunswick Theological Seminary, the oldest seminary in North America. Prior to her appointment, Dr. Davis served as Director of Law Student Development at Southern Illinois University School of Law.
Dr. Davis holds a BA from Franklin and Marshall College, a M.Div. from Boston University School of Theology, a J.D. from Boston University School of Law, a D.Min. from United Theological Seminary, and is a Ph.D. candidate in Education at Southern Illinois University.
