MANASSAS, Va., Aug. 25, 2011 /Standard Newswire/ -- NRB has sent a letter to FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski and each FCC Commissioner, thanking them for striking the Fairness Doctrine from the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR).
"NRB has long agreed that this rule has a chilling effect on free speech and the free flow of ideas," said Dr. Frank Wright, NRB President & CEO, in yesterday's letter. "NRB Members are pleased that the text of this rule, while abandoned decades ago, is at long last removed from the books."
"Now that the letter of this rule has been eliminated," continued Dr. Wright, "NRB stands ready to work with you to ensure that the spirit of the Fairness Doctrine does not creep into other rules or proceedings." He then cited the FCC Working Group on the Information Needs of Communities, which issued Findings earlier this summer warning of bureaucratic heavy-handedness in some of the policies that have been considered in the name of "localism."
"'Localism' poses a fundamental threat to free speech when its application is wielded by those who prefer a return to the old days of government regulation of broadcast content," said Dr. Wright this morning. "Chairman Genachowski understands the absurdity of the Fairness Doctrine and its underlying premise, which is why we applaud his action this week. At the same time, our government is made up of many individuals with a variety of agendas, so NRB will remain vigilant in the future whenever localism programs are considered."
