WASHINGTON, Jan. 22 /Standard Newswire/ -- House Republican Leader John Boehner (R-OH) issued the following statement today marking the 37th anniversary of the Supreme Court's catastrophic decision in Roe v. Wade and welcoming participants in the annual March for Life:
- "Today marks the 37th anniversary of the Supreme Court's tragic ruling in Roe v. Wade overturning state laws protecting life and setting the stage for the termination of tens of millions of unborn children. Thousands have come to Washington each year on this day ever since to march and pray for life. I welcome March for Life participants to Washington and commend them for their continued vigilance, which is needed now more than ever. I also salute the faithful dedication of Nellie Gray, the President of March for Life who has worked tirelessly since 1974 to ensure the voices of pro-lifers are heard in the nation's capitol.
- "House Republicans sent President Obama a letter shortly after he took office urging him not to divide the country during a time of great challenges by pursuing an agenda that would expand abortion. Unfortunately, just days later, President Obama overturned the Mexico City Policy to allow federal funds to be given to international family planning organizations that also perform elective abortions. This was the first in a series of dangerous steps President Obama and Democrats in Congress have taken to unravel long-standing pro-life protections. President Obama also insisted that federal taxpayer funds be directed to UNFPA -- the family planning agency at the UN that has supported China's one-child policy. The President overhauled the country's embryonic stem cell policy, creating more incentives to destroy human embryos in the name of research.
"Even more appalling, Democratic leaders are attempting to pave the way for taxpayer-funded abortions through a government takeover of health care. Barring taxpayer dollars from being used to pay for abortions has been the law of the land for decades through the Hyde Amendment, and a majority of Americans want to keep it that way. Though the House of Representatives passed the bipartisan Stupak-Pitts amendment prohibiting federal funds from paying for abortion, Democratic leaders are still seeking ways to defy the will of the people and drop the amendment from any final health care bill. Health care reform should be an opportunity to protect human life -- not end it.
- "Today marks the beginning of another year standing together to affirm the inherent value and dignity of all human life -- both in our culture and in our laws."
NOTE: Leader Boehner greeted March for Life participants from his home state of Ohio at the Capitol this morning. He is also one of several national pro-life leaders participating in the first-ever Virtual March for Life, organized by Americans United for Life (AUL).
