Life Legal Defense Foundation Helped Convince Court to Issue Permanent Injunction

BIRMINGHAM, Ala., Aug. 8, 2013 /Standard Newswire/ -- Today a permanent injunction was issued against the unlicensed New Woman, All Women abortion clinic in Birmingham, Alabama. Jefferson County Circuit Judge Joseph Boohaker issued the injunction against Diane Derzis, the clinic owner, agreeing with the Alabama Department of Public Health that she and doctor Bruce Norman were performing abortions illegally.
Attorney Allison Aranda, Senior Staff Counsel for Life Legal Defense Foundation, issued the following statement in response, "We are elated that Judge Boohaker saw Bruce Norman's activities for what they really were -- operating an unlicensed abortion clinic. The court has essentially ordered Norman to cease operating an abortion clinic without having a license, which seems like common sense -- that's what the law already states. But now, if Norman continues to defy the Alabama Department of Public Health regulations and Judge Boohaker's ruling, ADPH can seek further sanctions against Norman not merely for violating the law but for violating a court order as well."
Aranda added, "Another bright side in this matter is that any ambiguity about what constitutes an abortion center under the law is now made clear. If Norman further blatantly disregards the law and continues to provide abortions, he should now be subject to stricter scrutiny and he risks having his Alabama medical license revoked entirely. This wouldn't be a bad move by the Alabama Board of Medical Examiners in light of recent events in Jackson, Mississippi, where this week another woman was rushed to the hospital after suffering injuries during an abortion performed by Bruce Norman.'
