VALLEJO, Calif., Nov. 17 /Standard Newswire/ -- Tensions are expected to come to a head tomorrow in Vallejo as LGBT activists defend efforts to promote gay families to elementary-age students.
The controversy centers around three films, "That's a Family," "Let's Get Real," and "Straightlaced," that promote the idea that gay relationships are just as normal as any other family structure. The films are being mandated as part of a legal settlement between the ACLU and VCUSD. A parent questioned the District's refusal to allow objecting families to opt out of the instruction, which has been mandated for all students in the District - including first-graders. The Vallejo City Unified School District governing board will hear from the community and discuss the issue Wednesday night beginning at 5 p.m.
Pacific Justice Institute plans to have an attorney in attendance at the school board meeting, representing local parents. PJI has also sent a public records request to the District, seeking to uncover the truth behind bullying and harassment in the schools. In the nearby Alameda Unified School District, when a pro-LGBT curriculum was being pushed, allegedly to combat anti-gay bullying, PJI obtained public documents showing that harassment and bullying based on sexual orientation was virtually nonexistent in the district. Instead, there were numerous incidents of racial and gender-based bullying, which was not addressed at all by the controversial curriculum.
PJI Chief Counsel Kevin Snider commented, "All too often, we have found that anti-bullying curriculum does not actually address the major causes of schoolyard bullying, but only the small number of incidents based on politically-favored characteristics like sexual orientation. We are calling on the school board to adopt a curriculum consistent with state law that covers all students and protected classes, not just a few." Snider also noted that, in the blockbuster Prop 8 case now before the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, the staunchly pro-LGBT California Teachers Association argued that state law "does not require public schools to instill private moral values regarding same-sex marriage in children."
