SEATTLE, May 7 /Standard Newswire/ -- Eleven people are dead and at least 50,000 others are homeless after heavy rains triggered flooding along Sri Lanka's coastal belt. Some parts of the country have also experienced landslides. The sudden floods caused massive traffic disruptions.

The roads and the railway lines were submerged by the floods.

The meteorology department said Colombo received over 12 centimetres (nearly five inches) of rain in 24 hours.

Monsoon rains are due to arrive later this month and run through to September, typically causing widespread flooding and displacement.

World Vision is planning to provide food packs to the displaced people. The Humanitarian and Emergency Affairs team is conducting a rapid assessment of all World Vision projects to ascertain the exact emergency relief requirements.
