Boehner Praises Rep. Chris Smith's (R-NJ) Legislation to Codify Pro-Life Hyde Amendment

GOP Leader: "There is simply no good reason for Congress not to codify the Hyde Amendment, which reflects the clearly-expressed will of the American people."

WASHINGTON, July 30 /Standard Newswire/ -- House Republican Leader John Boehner (R-OH) issued the following statement after Rep. Chris Smith (R-NJ) introduced critical legislation that will codify the pro-life Hyde amendment and bar Congress from using taxpayer funds for abortion or abortion coverage:

"I'm proud to be an original cosponsor to Rep. Smith's bill, which would protect life, codify the pro-life Hyde amendment and bar Congress from using taxpayer funds for abortion or abortion coverage.  Americans do not want to see their tax dollars spent on abortion -- period.  Using taxpayer money to promote the destruction of innocent human life diminishes freedom for all Americans and is contrary to our nation's character as a country endowed by our Creator with 'life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.'  By contrast, when we affirm the dignity of life, we affirm our commitment to freedom.

"There is simply no good reason for Congress not to codify the Hyde Amendment, which reflects the clearly-expressed will of the American people.  The need for Rep. Smith's bill has become more clear than ever as a result of the disingenuous way in which the White House and the Democratic congressional leadership thwarted enactment of the pro-life Stupak-Pitts  amendment during the debate over health care earlier this year.  Rather than allowing the pro-life Stupak-Pitts amendment to become law, President Obama issued an Executive Order purporting to eliminate the need for such an amendment.  Americans now know, based on recent developments and the administration's subsequent scrambling to patch holes exposed in its claim by pro-life Americans, that the president's Executive Order is inadequate."

"House Republicans are fighting to repeal this life-threatening health care law and replace it with responsible solutions focused on lowering costs and expanding access to quality, affordable care while protecting the dignity of all human life."

NOTE: Rep. Chris Smith (R-NJ) recently posted an idea for discussion on America Speaking Out based on the bill he introduced today.  Americans can visit America Speaking Out right now to vote on Rep. Smith’s idea and make their voices heard.
