WASHINGTON, April 7, 2011 /Standard Newswire/ -- As abortion advocates gather on the National Mall today to demand that Congress continue funneling hundreds of millions of tax dollars to Planned Parenthood, 40 Days for Life announced that its spring campaign is the largest and longest sustained demonstration outside Planned Parenthood offices in history. Planned Parenthood's abortion chain, which has performed more than 5 million abortions since 1970, receives $363.2 million in annual taxpayer funding.
The current 40 Days for Life effort, which runs from March 9 through April 17, includes constant prayer vigils -- many round the clock -- outside 107 Planned Parenthood clinics nationwide, seven days a week, for 40 days. An additional 140 abortion centers across the country are also being covered with constant prayer vigils. A list of participating locations can be found at: www.40daysforlife.com/location.cfm.
"The pro-life grassroots has never been this fired up, working day and night to expose Planned Parenthood and end abortion in their communities," said 40 Days for Life national director David Bereit. "With all that is at stake right now, there has never been a more important time to pray and act. And more than 100,000 people from coast to coast are simultaneously doing just that as part of this 40 Days for Life campaign."
During the last few weeks of this 40 Days for Life campaign, Planned Parenthood conducted a bus tour to a number of congressional districts across the country. In many cases, 40 Days for Life prayer vigils were in progress at the Planned Parenthood tour bus's stops, with vigil participants frequently outnumbering abortion advocates. "The overwhelming response to the spring 40 Days for Life campaign is evidence of the growing opposition to Planned Parenthood," said Bereit. "With activists outside more than 100 of its offices day and night, Planned Parenthood knows it is in trouble and that the momentum is on pro-life America's side."
40 Days for Life is a focused pro-life campaign working to end abortion through prayer and fasting, peaceful vigils outside abortion centers, and grassroots community outreach. Since beginning as a coordinated effort in 2007, more than 450,000 people have participated from over 14,000 church congregations. 40 Days for Life campaigns have resulted in more than 3,800 children being spared from abortion, 43 abortion workers have quit their jobs and left the abortion industry, and nine abortion facilities have gone out of business.
