"Tamil civilians are encircled by the Sri Lankan military in northern Sri Lanka, and thousands have already been slaughtered. The bloodbath has begun, with hundreds dying daily due to constant shelling and gunfire. Children are dying daily of starvation, and there is massive flooding that prevents civilians from seeking cover within bunkers. Hospitals have been cluster bombed, so there is no place to treat the injured. We desperately need Oprah and the kindhearted American people to know about this crisis so that they can urge the United States government to intervene on behalf of civilians under attack," spokesman Kannan Srekantha said.
In December 2008, Genocide Prevention Project put Sri Lanka on "Red Alert" for experiencing ongoing or imminent genocide. Since the report's publication, more than 4500 civilians have been killed, according to the United Nations. This has been a silent war without witnesses, since the Government of Sri Lanka continues to deny access for NGOs and journalists into the conflict zone.
To date, the students have walked for 49 days. They have traveled through Canada’s bitter winter weather conditions to reach the United States. They continue to entrust Oprah with providing them an opportunity to highlight the dire situation in Sri Lanka.
