MEDIA ADVISORY, Nov. 12, 2019 /Standard Newswire/ -- In 2017, roughly 30,000 abortions were performed in Pennsylvania—a decrease of 870 abortions from 2016 and the lowest number ever recorded in the state.
In contrast, nearly 66,000 abortions were performed in Pennsylvania in 1980. One of the key organizations helping the state achieve the record low is Real Alternatives, which has been providing pregnancy support services at no cost for nearly 25 years. Since its establishment, Real Alternatives has served more than 300,000 clients at its 90 affiliated centers across Pennsylvania, which include adoption homes, Catholic Charities Centers, and Catholic Social Services of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. Real Alternatives has also expanded into other states.
Offering life-affirming support, Real Alternatives' counselors empower women to overcome obstacles, so they feel confident in their ability to care for their baby. They offer services to expecting mothers during pregnancy and throughout the first year of the baby's life. This assistance is crucial for women facing unplanned pregnancies, who often do not have support or approval from their family or the baby's father.
Pennsylvania Governor Bob Casey paved the way for the launch of Real Alternatives in 1995 by allocating funding in the state budget to help women experiencing unexpected pregnancies. The organization launched a national expansion program in 1999 and secured appropriate funding from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Real Alternatives has since been lauded for its efforts in preventing abortions by prominent political leaders, including Vice President Mike Pence.
