WASHINGTON, June 17 /Standard Newswire/ -- U.S. Senator Sam Brownback last night commented on the ongoing concerns about the elections in Iran. He released the following statement.
"Over the last several days, I have been inspired by images of Iranians peacefully exercising the universal right to free speech and expression. I also have been disturbed by reports that demonstrators have been injured or killed by the regime. I call upon that regime to listen carefully to the Iranian people and to act with restraint. I hope that the voices of the people will be heard and that problems with the recent election can be resolved to the satisfaction of all Iranians.
"I will continue to work with my colleagues in the Senate to advocate on behalf of the human rights of the Iranian people by opposing the regime's repression and brutality, and by supporting a free flow of information into and out of Iran. My focus is not on the regime, but on the Iranian people, who are the natural ally of the United States, and we should lend support to their struggle for an accountable, democratic government that protects fundamental human rights and freedoms.
"I look forward to working with all individuals and groups who share a vision of a peaceful, prosperous and democratic Iran."
