CHITTAGONG, Bangladesh, June 13 /Standard Newswire/ -- Battling waist-high flood waters, ActionAid is delivering emergency relief supplies in Chittagong, Bangladesh's second largest city, which has been hit by the heaviest monsoon rains in nearly a decade.
Relief packages for 2550 families – including dry food, candles and matches – are being distributed to some of the worst hit areas of the city, which was ravaged by mudslides on Monday (11.06.07).
Areas of the city, which is home to around 5 million people, are still under at least 1m of water. At least 130 people have been killed by the heavy rains so far and close to 500,000 affected.
Water and sanitation are now a grim concern for many affected people, a situation that is only likely to get worse with more heavy rain forecast.
ActionAid partner organisations Young Power in Social Action (YPSA) and Unite Theatre for Social Action (UTSA) have been providing relief supplies in the city and surrounding areas.
Over 10,000 people are estimated to be living in temporary shelter.
