WASHINGTON, Oct. 6 /Standard Newswire/ -- Congressman J. Randy Forbes (R-VA), Founder and Chairman of the Congressional Prayer Caucus, will attend the Supreme Court hearing on Salazar v. Buono on October 7, a case involving a wooden cross in the Mojave Desert that has served as a Veteran's Memorial since 1934. The cross is being challenged as violating the Establishment Clause. Congressman Forbes, along with other Members of the Prayer Caucus, is represented as amici in the case.
On Wednesday, October 7, media will have the opportunity to talk with Congressman Forbes prior to and anytime after the Supreme Court hears oral arguments in the precedent setting Establishment Clause case. Media representatives wishing to arrange an interview with Congressman Forbes should contact Jessica Mancari at 202-225-6365 or 202-329-1040 to arrange access.
Last week, Congressman Forbes announced the unveiling of the engraving of "In God We Trust" in the Capitol Visitor Center. This announcement followed a year-long effort by the Congressional Prayer Caucus to reverse the stripping of references to religious history in the Capitol Visitor Center.
Congressman Forbes was also represented as amici in a recent decision in a federal court holding that the words "One nation, under God" in the Pledge of Allegiance do not violate the Establishment Clause. Additionally, Congressman Forbes stood with a principal and athletic director in Florida who faced criminal contempt charges for offering a prayer, and he has successfully led the fight against attempts to remove the name of God from flag certificates accompanying flags flown over the U.S. Capitol and to remove the words Laus Deo from the capstone of the Washington monument.
