Contact: Ian Woolverton, Oxfam Australia, 0409 181 454

FITZROY, Australia, Apr. 3 /Standard Newswire/ -- A disaster management expert working with Oxfam Australia in the Solomon Islands is helping to coordinate the relief effort following yesterday's tsunami that is feared to have claimed dozens of lives.

Rex Tara, 34, is leading a disaster assessment and response team put together by the Solomon Islands National Disaster Management Office that includes humanitarian agencies such as Oxfam, United Nations and Red Cross as well as the Solomon Islands' Ministry of Infrastructure and Ministry of Health.

According to Mr Tara initial indications are that at least 500 houses and shops on the Gizo island northwest of the Solomons capital, Honiara have been damaged as a result of the tsunami. Damage to out lying islands is still unclear.

'Oxfam's number one priority is to ensure adequate access to clean drinking water, food and shelter to those affected by the disaster,' said Mr Tara.
