Over the course of six weeks, a trained facilitator will take parents through one of the most in-depth drug awareness curriculums in the nation. Parents will increase their awareness of popular drugs and their effects, learn to engage their children in meaningful conversations, recognize the warning signs and properly deal with kids who are already using drugs. Once trained, parents will be certified to hold training sessions in their communities.
"Healthy communication between parents and their children is the key to reducing the risk of drug use," said Marc Fey, director of Community Impact Outreach for Focus on the Family. "With this program, parents will be given the tools and proven strategies needed to begin to influence their children's choices when it comes to drug and alcohol use."
Many parents believe that when confronted with drugs or alcohol their kids will be the ones who "Just Say No." But, according to the U.S. Department of Justice, 70 percent of high school seniors have used alcohol and nearly 35 percent have used marijuana in the last year.
"Trying to talk with kids about drugs can be a daunting proposition for many parents," Fey said. "Many parents desire to help their kids make positive life choices but they just don't know where to start. How to Drug Proof Your Kids™ is the tool that parents have been waiting for. It will give them the training and confidence they need."
Focus on the Family will conduct program facilitator trainings in various locations around the country. The schedule of upcoming facilitator trainings can be found at http://www.drugproofyourkids.com/Events/.
