Church Watchdog Condemns Episcopal Diocese of New York Refusal to Follow Requirements to Care for Victim in St. Thomas Sex Abuse Case

ALEXANDRIA, Va., Aug. 12, 2025 /Standard Newswire/ — Anglican Watch, the unofficial watchdog group for the Episcopal Church, today condemned the Episcopal Diocese of New York and Suffragan Bishop Allen K. Shin for their refusal to follow church policies in clergy disciplinary cases involving allegations of sexual abuse.

“One of the requirements in all Title IV clergy disciplinary cases is that a pastoral response be a top priority at all phases of the process,” said Anglican Watch official Eric Bonetti.

“Additionally, since the last Episcopal General Convention, cases involving allegations of sexual misconduct require a professional assessment of the pastoral needs for all parties involved. Neither has happened, despite our pointing out these egregious oversights, including via an email sent directly to Bishop Shin.

“Indeed, the Diocese continues to retaliate against the victim, who, seven months after complaining about abuse, remains barred from all church facilities and activities. Moreover, Bishop Shin has expressly left these measures in place.

“How this conduct evinces Christian compassion or concern escapes us,” Bonetti adds. “Indeed, it serves only to further traumatize the victim, even as the victim’s complaint continues to move at a glacial pace.

“It is time for Bishop Shin to resign if he cannot even manage to care for the victim of sexual assault,” Bonetti concludes. “We further note that one of the alleged assailants remains active as an Episcopal priest.”

Founded in 2015, Anglican Watch is the unofficial watchdog of the Episcopal Church. The organization addresses both sexual and non-sexual abuse in the Episcopal Church and other faith traditions.
