WASHINGTON, Jan. 2 /Standard Newswire/ -- House Republican Leader John Boehner (R-OH) issued the following statement today welcoming President-Elect Obama to Capitol Hill on Monday for a meeting with House & Senate leaders:
"I look forward to meeting with President-elect Obama, Democratic leaders, and Republican Leader McConnell on Monday, and I hope this is the first of many bipartisan meetings on the significant challenges facing our country, particularly our troubled economy. Republicans want to work together with our colleagues across the aisle to get our economy moving again on behalf of American families, small businesses, and seniors.
"However, I am concerned by media reports that suggest the Democrats' emerging proposal may cost taxpayers up to one trillion in new government spending, with little debate or public scrutiny of the still-unseen legislation. Let's be clear: it is essential that this legislation be debated in a fair, open, and honest way. Congress should have public hearings in the appropriate committees, the text of the measure should be made available online for the American people to review for at least one week, and it should be free from special-interest earmarks. This is the taxpayers’ money, and they deserve to know their hard-earned tax dollars aren’t being wasted.
"Republicans have offered solutions to help create American jobs and get our economy back on track without asking taxpayers to pay for up to one trillion in new government spending, and they merit serious consideration. I am eager to discuss these proposals with the President-elect and our Democratic colleagues next week."
NOTE: House Republicans have put forward a Rapid Economic Recovery Plan which would help get our economy moving again by doubling the child tax credit, rebuilding 401(k) retirement accounts, creating a million new jobs by increasing the production of American energy, and reforming our tax system to keep more American jobs in America.
