WASHINGTON, Aug. 6 /Standard Newswire/ -- The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) administered the oath of office to Greg Gottlieb as its Mission Director for Namibia. USAID Administrator, Henrietta H. Fore, presided at the event.

As Mission Director for Namibia, Gottlieb will lead USAID's programs to improve health, increase Namibia's economic growth, improve the quality of basic education, and promote democracy and good governance. USAID/Namibia's strategic focus will entail responsibility for $47 million in funding for the Presidents Emergency Plan for Aids Relief (PEPFAR), and $1.9 million dollars in global health, child survival, tuberculosis and other health-related funding. Most recently, Namibia and the Millennium Challenge Corporation signed a five-year compact for $304.5 million dollars.

"Namibia has undergone a remarkable transformation since the end of its 24 years of insurrection and warfare to gain its independence in 1990. With a proven track record, Greg possesses the qualifications, experience, and technical expertise necessary to gain an enduring friendship between our two countries and for a brighter future for all the people of Namibia," said Administrator Fore.

Gottlieb most recently served as Senior Deputy Assistant Administrator of USAID's Bureau for Democracy, Conflict and Humanitarian Assistance. With more than 25 years of experience with the U.S. government, NGOs, and the UN, Gottlieb has served in Sudan, Ethiopia, Malawi, and Kenya. Gottlieb began his USAID career in 1996 as a Disaster Response Coordinator in Kenya and by 1999 he established the first regional USAID Office of U.S. Foreign Disaster Assistance in Africa as Senior Regional Advisor. Much of his work has focused on improving disaster assistance as well as humanitarian and transition programs in order to ensure economic development.

Gottlieb obtained his bachelors' degree from Humboldt State University in California, a Juris Doctor degree from Loyola Law School, and a master's degree from Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government. He is married and has two children.
