Empower Mats Accessible Technologies Facilitate the Participation of Students with Visual Disabilities and Blindness in Competitive Robotics Programs

FOREST HILL, Md., Oct. 18, 2021 /Standard Newswire/ -- Empower Mats, designed by Robot Mats and distributed by Geyer Instructional Products, provides an accessible mat for FIRST LEGO League's (FLL) 2021 challenge, Cargo Connection. The goal is to allow visually impaired, color blind, and blind students to participate in competitive robotics.

Robotics is a great way to introduce youth to the principles of mechanical engineering, computer science, and artificial intelligence. Robotics has helped thousands of students develop their creative problem solving, collaboration, and teamwork skills while having fun in the process.

Students with visual disabilities have been disadvantaged because most products are designed with only sighted users in mind. Empower Mats aims to give children with a variety of visual disabilities an opportunity to participate in mainstream competitive robotics.

What's different about Empower Mats? The creative line of robotics training mats provides proper colors and tactile guidance to locations and paths with braille descriptions, where needed. The goal is to create a mat that allows all students to fully participate with limited sighted assistance without impeding other teams' robots.

These innovations are made possible through a grant from the Vision Advancement Foundation of Oklahoma and in collaboration with The Maryland School for The Blind.

Empower Mats is creating new opportunities for students with visual disabilities to be involved in STEM activities. This technology may assist students with other disabilities along with their sighted peers. "We want to see all students be able to participate in STEM activities and pursue STEM careers." Adds founder Marco Ciavolino, "This is a first step in the right direction."

With a vision to develop accessible programming environments for EV3 and similar systems, Empower Mats will continue helping students with visual impairments. The company plans to develop products for blind and visually impaired students for FIRST LEGO League, Dash & Dot, BeeBots, SumoBots, and similar table-top robotics challenges.

Robot Mats also offers many other mats for robotics training and as well as custom projects.
