FREDERICKSBURG, Va., March 13, 2024 /Standard Newswire/ -- An "ordinary" woman reflects on her long life (she turned 80 in March 2024) and sees the blessings of family. However, when the world reviews Judie Brown's decades of accomplishment, the word "extraordinary" might be more appropriate. As the cofounder of the 45-year-old American Life League, Brown has influenced presidents and popes, called out Planned Parenthood and the NAACP, and continues to shape the pro-life movement even in the post-Roe era.
Asked what she considers her most significant achievement in life, Brown replied, "It was, and still is, being asked to marry the most remarkable man in the world, Paul A. Brown. Without him there would be no children or grandchildren, no American Life League, but most of all no chance to witness the miracles of his faith being renewed and practiced. God gave me and our entire family an incredible gift when I said yes to Paul."
Brown is immensely proud of her family. She works alongside her 55-year-old son, Hugh Brown, who serves as Judie's second in command as vice president of American Life League, and her granddaughter Katie Brown, who is the organization's director of communications.
In 1973, Judie Brown's parish pastor in Kannapolis, North Carolina, asked the young wife and mother to debate a local abortionist. This began her more than 50 years of pro-life advocacy, as she strived to protect the human person in all stages.
In her 2002 autobiography, Judie Brown recounted how an ordinary upbringing led to a life filled with extraordinary encounters in the pursuit of laws to protect the lives of preborn children and the health and safety of their mothers. Yet Brown's path has been far from mundane, as she has advocated for life, wielded influence over political and religious leaders, and drawn support from cultural icons as diverse as renowned conservative senator Jesse Helms and former abortionist Dr. Bernard Nathanson.
Judie Brown's friendship with President Ronald Reagan affirmed the "Gipper's" unapologetically pro-life views. Her years of service under Pope John Paul II and Pope Benedict XVI on the Pontifical Academy for Life served the official papal academy in its dedicated mission to promoting the Roman Catholic Church's respect for every human being's life. Brown has publicly shared her pro-life knowledge on national television with hundreds of thousands of viewers, including hosts Oprah Winfrey and Phil Donahue.
No account of Judie Brown's life would be complete without giving credit to the Catholic faith that she holds so dear.
Brown acknowledged, "I have been at the forefront of defending women who are not yet born, their moms, and their extended families. I've sought the help of the Blessed Mother in doing all this for years. As Our Lady has taught us, humility and prayer are the core of our battle."
