MC LEAN, Va., Nov. 19 /Standard Newswire/ -- Senator Fred Thompson's presidential campaign today expanded its political and volunteer organization in Southeast Florida, naming county and volunteer chairmen in Miami-Dade County. Mayor Lynda Bell, the newly elected mayor of Homestead, Florida, and Miami-Dade County Commissioners Joe Martinez and Natacha Seijas will serve as county co-chairmen, leading the grassroots organization in Miami-Dade.

"I am confident in Senator Thompson's strong and principled leadership," said Mayor Bell. "The Senator's 100 percent pro-life voting record, commitment to revitalizing our national defense and courage to protect seniors by saving social security resonates with our local voters."

Mayor Lynda Bell was elected earlier this month and is the first female to serve as mayor of Homestead, Florida. She was elected vice mayor in 2003, and also served as a member of the Homestead City Council. Bell also serves as the president of Florida Right to Life.

Commissioner Natacha Seijas was elected to the Miami-Dade Board of County Commissioners in 1993, becoming the first Hispanic woman to be elected to the County Commission.  Representing the Hialeah, Miami Lakes, Palm Springs and Country Club regions, she serves as chairperson of the Infrastructure and Land Use Committee and was recently appointed to the Governmental Structure Task Force.

Commissioner Joe Martinez has served the residents of District 11 since October 2000.  In November 2004, he served as chairman of the Board of County Commissioners, the first Hispanic elected to hold this leadership role.  A 17-year veteran of the Miami-Dade Police Department, Martinez currently chairs the Budget and Finance Committee.

"We are pleased to have the support of many distinguished community leaders throughout Miami-Dade County," said Todd Thomson, executive director of Senator Thompson's Florida campaign. "We look forward to working with Mayor Bell, Commissioners Martinez and Seijas and our network of grassroots supporters to spread Senator Thompson's consistent conservative message to the people of Miami-Dade County."

County chairmen serve as local surrogates, spreading Senator Thompson's message throughout their respective counties. Volunteer chairmen serve as the liaison between local volunteers and the state campaign headquarters and work to locate and organize supporters and coordinate volunteer activities in communities within the county.
