WASHINGTON, Dec. 6 /Standard Newswire/ -- Candidates and office holders should be judged by their positions and views on the issues, not their faith traditions.
The Constitution makes it clear that there should be no "religious litmus test" for federal office holders.
The fact that many Americans would not vote for a candidate who embraces the Mormon faith shows how far America has to go with respect to embracing religious tolerance.
Rev. Patrick J. Mahoney, Director of the Christian Defense Coalition, comments, "Religious bigotry and intolerance should have no place within the landscape of American politics. Our Founding Fathers showed great wisdom when they wrote in the Constitution that there shall be no religious litmus test with respect to holding federal office.
"Our elected officials should be viewed through the lens of where they stand on the issues, not what particular faith tradition they follow. Past and present history has painted a tragic picture when certain religious values are forced upon the people and their political leaders.
"It is a sad commentary on the state of American politics when Governor Romney has to make a speech on religious freedom just because he happens to be a Mormon. Just as it sad a generation ago, when President Kennedy found himself in a similar position because he was a Catholic.
"Now is the time for all Americans to embrace one of our most cherished principles. That is, every American should be allowed to practice their own faith tradition free from prejudice, harassment and discrimination. This certainly holds true for political candidates as well."
