Commended his unwavering conservative leadership

WASHINGTON, July 4 /Standard Newswire/ -- U.S. Senator Sam Brownback today mourned the loss of former Senator Jesse Helms of North Carolina and offered condolences to Helms' wife and children.

"Jesse Helms was a gentle man yet doggedly determined," Brownback said. "He almost single-handedly helped launch Reagan era conservatism and in international affairs in particular, he articulated and put into action a determined, clear U.S. foreign policy stand that has served our country well to this day."

Helms, a former five-term U.S. senator from North Carolina died early this morning at the age of 86.  Helms became chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee in 1994 and provided conservative and consistent leadership.  President Ronald Reagan described Helms conservative leaderships in a speech in 1983, "We'll never forget how he battled, especially during those first lonely years, to protect our liberties, preserve our family values and keep America strong. There he was, standing day after day to a government Goliath, crying out like a voice in the wilderness...Bit by bit, he became more than a lonely crusader. He grew into a lionhearted leader of a great and growing army."

Brownback continued, "Jesse Helms will be missed as a statesman and a conservative pioneer.  But even more, he will be missed as a father and a husband.  My condolences and prayers go out to his family and his friends."
