WASHINGTON, Jan. 23 /Standard Newswire/ -- House Republican Leader John Boehner (R-OH) issued the following statement on President Obama's executive order overturning the Mexico City policy, which prohibited taxpayer-funded abortions through international "family planning" groups:
"This executive order is a profound disappointment for me and millions of other Americans who were hopeful that President Obama's vow to govern from the center would apply to the divisive issue of abortion. Coming just one day after the 36th anniversary of the tragic Roe v. Wade decision, this presidential directive forces taxpayers to subsidize abortions overseas - something no American should be required by government to do. On this day, we remember and thank those who made the landmark Mexico City policy a reality - from my former colleague Henry Hyde to President Reagan. We know that their work has protected the sanctity of life for more than two decades, and we remain hopeful that it will again in the future.
"Today's action intensifies concern regarding President Obama's pledge to sign the so-called 'Freedom of Choice' Act, which would increase abortions and divide America. We again call on President Obama to withdraw this divisive pledge."
NOTE: Led by House Republican Leader John Boehner (R-OH), more than 100 House Republican legislators on Wednesday sent a letter to President Obama to withdraw his pledge to sign the so-called "Freedom of Choice" Act (FOCA), legislation that would overturn virtually all pro-life laws nationwide.
