WASHINGTON, April 15 /Standard Newswire/ -- Congressman John Boehner (R-West Chester) issued the following statement after the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services reported that Ohio's unemployment rate increased to 11 percent in the month of March, marking one year of double-digit unemployment in the Buckeye State:
- "Twelve straight months of double-digit is completely unacceptable. When they rushed their trillion-dollar 'stimulus' through Congress, the White House, with the support of Governor Strickland, promised that unemployment would not exceed eight percent and that job creation would begin 'almost immediately.' But more than one year later, another 180,000 Ohioans have lost their jobs, and the national deficit is set to hit a record $1.6 trillion.
"Today's troubling jobs report is just the latest sign that Ohio cannot afford any more of President Obama's tax-and spend agenda. I'm already hearing from Eighth District small business owners who say that all the new taxes and mandates in Washington Democrats' government takeover of health care will hurt their bottom line and hurt their ability to retain employees. Making matters worse, Democrats are now considering a costly European-style value-added tax that would hurt every family and small business in the country.
"Ohioans are looking for common-sense solutions to help them tackle the challenges they are facing every day, but all they are getting from the Democrats who control Washington is more taxes, more spending and more debt piled on the backs of our children and grandchildren. Only Republicans have proposed a no-cost jobs plan that will help small businesses get back on track and put people back to work."
