MOUNT AIRY, N.C., March 19, 2019 /Standard Newswire/ -- Have you heard the one about the comedian who was so deep in debt he was afraid to answer the phone fearing it was another bill collector? For John Floyd, it was no laughing matter. By his early 30s, John Floyd was so deep in debt he never even attempted to use his credit card because he knew it would be declined. He owed more on his car than it was worth and had only $15 in savings.
But he turned his finances around and soon got out of credit card debt and has stayed that way. He paid off the car he was "upside down" on early, then paid cash for his next one. These days he doesn't max out his credit card, he maxes out his retirement plans. He became so obsessed with finances that he wrote the highly acclaimed book Debt Free Is The Way To Be. Floyd spent years going on the road telling jokes, now he goes on the road making it funny to learn about money.
"I never thought I'd be teaching people about money," Floyd says. "But I also never knew how easy it is to get out of debt and turn your finances around." It may seem hard to believe that someone who has been cracking jokes for years, and has worked with about every comedian from Milton Berle to Chris Rock, now talks about finances. But to Floyd, that's the whole point. "I hear people say all the time that they can't get out of debt because they're bad in math. You don't have to have your MBA to be good with money anymore than you have to be a professional chef to make a grilled cheese sandwich or an electrician to change a light bulb," he explains.
But even if you think a 401k is an auto race, Floyd's philosophy is that it's never too late to change your way of thinking. "In school everyone is taught how to make money," he says. "But we're never taught what to do with that money once we make it." While doing comedy is fun, Floyd thinks helping people take charge of their finances is even more fun. "I just like teaching people what I wish someone had taught me."
