WASHINGTON, April 21 /Standard Newswire/ -- U.S. Rep. Pete Hoekstra, R-Mich, and Michael Farris of ParentalRights.org earlier issued the following joint statement regarding the Parents' Rights Amendment:
"We recognized from the outset that amending the Constitution would not be easy and that we would encounter those entirely opposed to hearing this issue. However, the attention and support that the amendment has received just two weeks after introduction has been incredible. It is a testament to the grassroots support and tireless work of individuals and families nationwide supporting parents' rights.
"The grassroots support has been encouraging. The amendment has gained more than double our original goal for congressional co-sponsors upon introduction of the bill, from 30 to 70, and with continued support there is really no telling how fast we can drive this initiative.
"In just two weeks after introduction of the amendment, parental rights went from something that most people took for granted to a story that has been featured in Politico, on The O'Reilly Factor and on radio shows across the nation.
"The need to protect parents' rights has struck a nerve with the American people. In an era where congressional leadership and the administration offer the federal government as the only solution to the challenges we face, Americans are starting to realize that no sphere of their lives is off-limits from government encroachment. Specifically, parents are recognizing the real possibility of being told by the government how to manage their parent-child relationship.
"As more people learn about the U.S. Senate's possible ratification of the U.N. Convention on the Rights of the Child, the number of congressional co-sponsors will grow from the current 75 to a number that congressional leadership cannot ignore."
