MINNEAPOLIS, June 14, 2023 /Standard Newswire/ -- Bishop Robert Barron of Word on Fire will deliver the keynote address at the 42nd annual Chesterton Conference, July 27-29 at the Minneapolis Marriott Southwest in Minnetonka, Minnesota. This year's event marks the 100th anniversary of G.K. Chesterton's landmark biography of Saint Francis of Assisi. The book was Chesterton's first following his reception into the Catholic Church in 1922; Chesterton took Saint Francis as his Confirmation patron saint. The book was an enormous success and remains popular to this day.
The conference is being hosted by the Society of Gilbert Keith Chesterton, a Minneapolis-based Catholic lay apostolate dedicated to evangelizing through education. The schedule boasts a great variety of content, with presentations on everything from Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn's lessons for America to how a group of friends are revitalizing their dilapidated Rust Belt town by opening a cigar shop, inspired by the economic teachings of the Church.
G.K. Chesterton (1874-1936) was a popular journalist, novelist, playwright and poet, most popular today as the creator of the Father Brown character featured in a BBC television series. Chesterton was also a Christian, and later Roman Catholic, apologist and social critic, and in recent years there has been increasing interest among his admirers to see him elevated by the Church to the rank of a Saint.
The conference is co-hosted by the Chesterton Academy of the Twin Cities. The Academy is the founding member of the Chesterton Schools Network, an association of nearly 70 Catholic, classical high schools worldwide affiliated with the Society.
The conference had been held annually in the Twin Cities at the University of Saint Thomas for many years until 2008. This is its first time returning to the area after over a decade of events held in cities around the country. Dale Ahlquist, Society president, said, "We are excited to be back at home this year, and hope for a big local turnout. There are two local Chesterton Societies and two Chesterton Schools Network high schools (Chesterton Academy of the Twin Cities and Chesterton Academy of the Saint Croix Valley) right here in the Twin Cities. That represents hundreds, if not thousands, of people right here in Minneapolis-St. Paul whose lives are being impacted by G.K. Chesterton!"
Family packages, student discounts, and special hotel rates for attendees are available. More information can be found on the Society's website, chesterton.org/conference.
