WASHINGTON, Jan. 28 /Standard Newswire/ -- Noting that House Republicans have proposed a better solution to lower health premiums by up to 10 percent to the President and congressional Democrats months ago, House Republican Leader John Boehner (R-OH) responded to President Obama's remarks in his State of the Union address asking if anyone has a better approach to lower costs and bring down the deficit. Following are Boehner's remarks and a brief video excerpt:
- "You know, yesterday I said that the President needed to prove to the American people that he's listening. Unfortunately, the President doesn't appear to have listened to what the people in Massachusetts have said, what the people in New Jersey and Virginia had to say in the elections last year, and decided to just double-down on his job- killing agenda.
"If the Democrat leaders here in Congress and the President are serious about getting our economy going again and putting people back to work, we can, in fact, work together to promote policies that will do that. But there was nothing last night in the President's speech to indicate that there was any willingness to sit down and work together. Except one point: The President said when he was talking about health care and I'll quote, 'but if anyone from either party has a better approach that will bring down premiums, bring down the deficit, cover the uninsured, strengthen Medicare for seniors, and stop insurance company abuses, let me know.' That's when I put my hand up, because that's exactly what the Republican health care proposal does, much more so than the proposal that he and Democrat leaders are trying to shove down the throats of the American people."
"And so, we're eager for the President to come to our retreat tomorrow. We're going to have an honest conversation about America's priorities and trying to find ways to find some common ground."
NOTE: The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) has confirmed in a letter that the House Republican health care plan will lower health care premiums by up to 10 percent and reduce the deficit by $68 billion over 10 years without imposing tax increases on families and small businesses.
