GRAYSLAKE, Ill., July 12, 2018 /Standard Newswire/ -- Religious liberty is under attack and the 45-year-old Roe v. Wade decision still keeps abortion legal, yet there are many reasons for hope, according to Mary Hallan FioRito, Cardinal Francis George Fellow at the Ethics and Public Policy Center. FioRito is the keynote speaker at Lake County Right to Life's Benefit Banquet on July 27, 6 p.m., at the DoubleTree in Mundelein, Illinois.

Mary Hallan FioRito's presentation, "Religious Liberty: How It Weaves Through Our Lifetime," will tackle controversy and current events as she examines the social and political environment of abortion, in light of recent Supreme Court decisions and the Catholic Church's teachings regarding the dignity of human life. She will share insights on the recent United States Supreme Court support for the rights of pro-life pregnancy centers (NIFLA v. Becerra), offer a 50th anniversary retrospective on Pope Paul VI's encyclical on contraception and married life, and offer ways that the pro-life community can address future threats with confidence and facts. The event is free, but a financial appeal will be made. Reservations are required.

"Mary Hallan FioRito is a voice for every woman in the church and for all people of conscience. Whether she is striving to find common ground between participants in the March for Life and the Women's March, or inviting Catholic women to 'lean in' to church leadership opportunities, Ms. FioRito invites honest dialogue and encourages critical review of current events," shared Bonnie Quirke, President of Lake County Right to Life. "So many critics of the pro-life position complain that abortion is a women's rights issue. Mary makes it clear that abortion is a human issue."

"This is the 50th anniversary of Pope Paul VI's Humanae Vitae, a Vatican encyclical on human life," shared FioRito. "It was politically controversial because it prohibited most forms of artificial contraception, and it affirmed traditional Church moral teaching on the sanctity of life and the procreative nature of sex and marriage. Yet, half a century later we are living in the predicted fallout – escalated abortion, breakdown of the family, disregard for marriages, and objectification of women, as illustrated by the #MeToo movement."

An attorney, public speaker, and commentator on human life and religious liberty issues, Ethics and Public Policy Center Fellow FioRito received her Juris Doctor degree from Loyola University School of Law. In 1993, she was selected by the late Joseph Cardinal Bernardin as the Director of Pro-life Activities for the Archdiocese of Chicago. She worked in various capacities for the Catholic Church for more than 28 years, including serving as the Archdiocese of Chicago's first female Vice-Chancellor. In 2003, she was promoted to the position of Executive Assistant to the late Francis Cardinal George, O.M.I., a role she held until the time of the Cardinal's death in April 2015.
