WASHINGTON, March 5 /Standard Newswire/ -- In response to the earthquake in Chile the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) has provided $1 million to the International Federation of the Red Cross (IFRC), to help with emergency assistance needs. In addition to the $1 million to IFRC, USAID is providing shelter material and mobile water treatment units to assist the people of Chile.

The two water treatment units USAID is providing will benefit up to 20,000 people per day, with each unit capable of producing at least 100,000 liters of safe drinking water daily for an estimated 10,000 individuals. USAID has another 6 water treatment units scheduled to arrive in Chile within the week. Since the earthquake struck on February 27th, USAID has also provided much needed communications equipment to the Government of Chile as well as an initial $50,000 to assist with immediate emergency needs.

USAID will continue to provide additional support as needed.
