William B. May and Raymond L. Flynn Comment on Proposition 8 Trial Decision

Contact: Kathleen Domingo, Catholics for the Common Good, 213-291-3580

SAN FRANCISCO, Aug. 5 /Standard Newswire/ -- Chairman William B. May, Chairman, Catholics for the Common Good comments on Judge Walkers decision to overturn the will of more than 7 million California voters who passed Prop 8 in 2008:

"It is indeed perplexing that Judge Walker found California voters discriminatory and bigoted in passing Prop 8 maintaining that there is no rational reason to support the only institution that unites a man and a woman with each other and any children that come from the relationship.

"The judge essentially ruled that citizens have no right to organize civil society unless their actions can be backed up by scientific or sociological evidence -- common sense is not enough.

"Walker concluded that mothers and fathers are of no consequence to children, and therefore promoting an institution that unites them with their mothers and fathers is not a rational reason for maintaining the 'traditional' definition of marriage."

Responding from Boston to this latest round of judicial activism, Catholics for the Common Good Adviser and former U.S. Ambassador to the Vatican and Mayor of Boston, Raymond L Flynn said the following:

"America is at a political crossroads. The people must now decide for themselves if they want unelected and unaccountable judges setting policy and over ruling the will of the American people. Elections have consequences."

In 2008, Catholics for the Common Good was asked by the California Catholic Conference to lead the lay Catholic response to Proposition 8. It has since been organizing, training and forming citizens to promote the centrality and integrity of marriage for children and society as an imperative of social justice.
