Conference to highlight critical role of America's nonprofit sector in response to disaster

WASHINGTON, May 23 /Standard Newswire/ -- White House Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives Director Jay Hein today announced the office will host a Gulf Coast Conference on Disaster Relief and Preparedness in New Orleans on May 29 and 30, 2008.
The White House Conference will feature Mrs. Laura Bush; Major General Doug O'Dell, Federal Coordinator for Gulf Coast Rebuilding; Danny Wuerffel, member of the President's Council on Service and Civic Participation; and other public- and private-sector leaders.
Held during National Hurricane Preparedness Week, the conference will highlight and strengthen the role of faith-based and community organizations in disaster preparedness, response and recovery, with special focus on the Gulf Coast region. Speakers and workshops will offer tools and training for social service organizations working to rebuild and sustain their communities, ranging from Federal, State and local partnership opportunities to successful practices of grassroots nonprofits.
