Life Legal Calls on Alabama Health Department to Shut Down PP
Contact: Alexandra Snyder, Life Legal Defense Foundation, 202-717-7371

NAPA, Calif., Dec. 7, 2018 /Standard Newswire/ -- Life Legal is calling on the Alabama Department of Public Health to suspend or revoke the licenses of three abortion facilities in the state: Planned Parenthood Birmingham, Planned Parenthood Mobile, and Reproductive Health Services in Montgomery. We are representing Fr. Terry Gensemer of CEC for Life and Troy Newman of Operation Rescue, who have documented evidence of numerous deficiency reports filed against the facilities.

The reports cite such dangers as failing to maintain a clean environment and sterile instruments, failing to properly review and evaluate physicians, defects in building structures, neglecting to provide patients with accurate information after an abortion, and failing to report an abortion on a minor under 14 years old as required by state law.

Moreover, the two Planned Parenthood locations are holding themselves out as performing abortions, when in fact neither facility is capable of doing abortions at this time. CEC for Life has evidence that several individuals called the facilities to make abortion appointments, but were turned away. Neither facility has performed abortions for well over a year, yet both advertise as offering in-clinic abortions to 14 weeks and 6 days.

Both facilities provide referrals for late-term abortions at 15 weeks and beyond. Alabama's stated public policy is to "protect life, born and unborn." State law prohibits the abortion of viable babies past 19 weeks gestation, except in cases where the mother's life is at risk.

In 2012, Life Legal took legal action to close the New Women All Women abortion facility because of similar deficiencies as in the present case. Life Legal exerted sufficient pressure on the Department of Public Health to permanently shutter the facility.

"It is high time for the Alabama Department of Public Health stop enabling Planned Parenthood's pattern of blatantly violating state laws and endangering the lives of women," said Life Legal Executive Director Alexandra Snyder. "We call for an immediate and thorough investigation into the business practices of Planned Parenthood and Reproductive Health Services and we urge state officials to hold them accountable for all violations."

Life Legal has given the Department of Public Health until January 4, 2019 to respond to our demands.
