Medair Expands Assistance to War-Affected Children

Contact: Medair, +41 21 694 35 35

UGANDA, July 13 /Standard Newswire/ -- Medair has received nearly €336,000 EUR from the European Union (EU) to continue its work with internally-displaced children in Northern Uganda.

The 18-month project will provide psychosocial support to trauma–affected children and ex-LRA child soldiers, in addition to practical assistance to 6000 orphans and 300 child-headed households.

"Previously we had been running this project on small grants that would last 6-9 months," said Anne Reitsema, Deputy Country Director, Medair Uganda. "We are delighted to be able to expand the work and get it onto a more stable footing. These children are some of the most vulnerable and destitute people that we work with."

As well as providing psychosocial support, Medair has been providing emergency, health, and water and sanitation services for internally-displaced people in Northern Uganda since 2000. It is currently working in the Karamoja region and Pader district serving 115,000 people in 11 camps.

Medair's activities in Uganda are supported with the assistance of OFDA, UNICEF, the Humanitarian Aid Department of the European Commission (ECHO), Chaine du Bonheur and the European Union Northern Ugandan Rehabilitation Program (EU-NURP). However, Medair's life-saving activities are also dependent upon private financial donation. To contribute to this work, click here.
