''The combined efforts of the various humanitarian organizations that have been working for months along the country's eastern coast are directed towards alleviating the suffering of thousands of people who have been displaced in connection with the conflict,'' said Toon Vandenhove, the ICRC's head of delegation in Colombo.
The rice will be delivered in stages during the month of May. About 600 tonnes will be distributed to 100,000 people in Batticaloa district and the remainder to 24,000 people in Trincomalee district.
