LANSING, Mich., Sept. 18, 2019 /Standard Newswire/ -- In the summer of 2018, the Michigan Civil Rights Commission—a collective of five appointees—sidestepped the Michigan Legislature and issued an Interpretive Statement regarding the usage of the word "sex" in Michigan's Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act of 1976. In the statement, the Commission announced it would be expanding the meaning of the word to include "gender identity" and "sexual orientation." At the request of the Legislature, the Attorney General at the time, Bill Schuette, responded to the overreach, denouncing the action as unlawful and mandating that the Commission retract to within the boundaries of its office. The Commission responded, saying it would stay the course as noted in its Interpretive Statement.
The very first week of January 2019, newly elected Governor Gretchen Whitmer began issuing executive directives that aligned with the radical Commission. One of note (Executive Directive 2019-09) prohibits the State of Michigan from doing business with any entity that exhibits conscientious objection—religious or otherwise—to the LGBTQ community and agenda. As a result, and unsurprisingly, many religious organizations and business owners have been negatively affected. Whitmer claims such a directive is "on the right side of history," and those who resist will inevitably suffer the unfortunate consequences. Whitmer calls the directive "moral," and in order to impose the morality, she has established a team of enforcers called "Equity and Inclusion Officers." These officers are to "receive complaints," "educate," "remedy noncompliance," and "monitor compliance."
This should terrify the citizens of Michigan.
A rally in defense of Religious Liberty will occur on Wednesday, October 2, 2019 at the Michigan Capitol Building in Lansing from 10 am until 2 pm. Your presence and voice is needed! More information at Lansingrally.com.
