WASHINGTON, Feb. 10 /Standard Newswire/ -- Today the United States Senate approved H.R. 1, the $838 billion piece of legislation that Family Research Council has been monitoring because of the potential devastating effect it will have on American families. Also of great concern is language buried in the education component of the bill that singles out religious institutions for discrimination.
Tony Perkins, President of Family Research Council, had this to say:
"When President Obama first talked of a 'stimulus' he insisted it be a bipartisan plan to create jobs. What resulted was a wasteful package that is full of more pork then a pig farm and more payoffs than an Illinois Governor's office. All this bill will do is greatly enlarge government programs and waste while pushing the U.S. economy and American families deeper into debt.
FRC has been instrumental in cataloging this wasteful spending and pointing out that there is very little tax relief for families in the bill. The non-partisan Congressional Budget Office estimates less then 22 percent in the Senate version is in the form of tax breaks, a very different number from the 40 percent President Obama promised.
"Democrats in the Senate, joined by liberal spending Republicans, have now joined with the Democrats in the House of Representatives to mortgage away the future of our children and their children. We call on President Obama to reject this bill and tell Congress to pass legislation that helps families and creates jobs, rather than only helping a few politicians in Washington and their cronies."
