CANTON, Ga., Aug. 5, 2026 /Standard Newswire/ — The Foundation for Pentecostal Scholarship announces the publication of The Enduring Sign: Tongues and the Baptism in the Holy Spirit, edited by Robert W. Graves. Bringing together Pentecostal scholars from several Pentecostal traditions, this substantial anthology offers a sustained examination of one of the most distinctive—and frequently debated—affirmations of Classical Pentecostal theology: speaking in tongues as the initial physical evidence of baptism in the Holy Spirit.
Rather than resting the case upon isolated proof texts or religious experience, The Enduring Sign approaches the subject through careful engagement with the cumulative witness of Scripture, with particular attention to Luke-Acts in its literary, historical, rhetorical, and theological contexts. Contributors explore biblical precedent, narrative theology, Greco-Roman rhetorical conventions, historical developments, theological objections, and the continuing missional significance of Spirit empowerment.
The following 18 contributors include scholars from the Assemblies of God, Pentecostal Assemblies of Canada, Church of God (Cleveland), and the International Pentecostal Holiness Church: Ben Aker, French L. Arrington, Paul Elbert, Mario Escobedo II, R. Hollis Gause, Donald A. Johns, Edgar R. Lee, Lim Yeu Chuen, Jeff Magruder, Robert P. Menzies, Denzil R. Miller, Anthony D. Palma, Rob Starner, Roger Stronstad, Vinson Synan, Allen Tennison, and George R. True III, with Robert W. Graves serving as contributor and editor.
A distinctive feature of the anthology is its “Congruent Voices” sections appended to the end of each of the 23 chapters, which bring the contributors’ arguments into conversation with additional past and present Pentecostal and non-Pentecostal scholarship, demonstrating significant continuities and convergences of interpretation across generations and traditions.
The Enduring Sign presents a cumulative case for the Classical Pentecostal understanding of tongues as initial physical evidence, demonstrating its biblical grounding, theological coherence, and enduring relevance. The volume invites scholars, ministers, students, and the wider church to engage afresh the biblical witness concerning Spirit baptism and to recover the expectation of Spirit empowerment that characterized the earliest Christian mission.
The 438-page book, which includes 53 pages of bibliography and indexes, is published by The Foundation for Pentecostal Scholarship, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing biblical scholarship within the global Pentecostal family.
