DEIR JARIR, WEST BANK, July 9, 2026 /Standard Newswire/ — At this hour, over one hundred Israeli settlers are flooding into the Palestinian village of Deir Jarir, east of Ramallah — directly adjacent to Taybeh, the last entirely Christian town in the West Bank — in an ongoing attack under the protection of Israeli forces. The Vulnerable People Project (VPP) is receiving current, on-the-ground reports as the attack unfolds. Eyewitnesses describe settlers pouring into the village in force and their numbers are still climbing. VPP is sounding the alarm and calls for immediate international intervention before the violence spreads.
According to information available as this release is issued, the assault began after a settler attacked a Palestinian vehicle and those inside it; the Palestinian driver, attempting to escape, struck the settler with his vehicle while fleeing. In the aftermath, Israeli forces sealed the entrance gate of Deir Jarir, trapping residents inside as confrontations erupted between Palestinians, settlers, and soldiers. Large numbers of settlers and Israeli troops are reportedly converging on the village, with settlers said to be seeking retaliation.
“Right now, as I speak, families in Deir Jarir are trapped behind a gate the army has locked while settlers flood the village and set a home on fire — and this is happening one hill over from Taybeh,” said Jason Jones, founder of the Vulnerable People Project. “We have warned for weeks that the noose was tightening around Taybeh and its neighbors. This is that warning coming true in real time. A house is burning with people sealed inside the village, and every minute of delay is measured in lives. The world cannot afford to learn what happened tomorrow. It has to act tonight — observers, diplomats, phone calls to the highest levels — before this attack claims lives and reaches the last Christian town in the West Bank.”
The gravest concern is where this is happening. Deir Jarir sits directly beside Taybeh, and both belong to the same embattled eastern-Ramallah corridor that has endured months of relentless settler violence. An attack of this scale on Taybeh’s doorstep — carried out under military protection and with settlers reportedly bent on revenge — raises the immediate danger that the violence will spill directly into Taybeh and the other Palestinian communities that ring it.
This is not Deir Jarir’s first such assault. In April 2026, a settler serving on Israeli military reserve duty shot 23-year-old Ali Hamadneh in the back on the village’s land as residents fled, killing him. Settlers stormed the village again in May, wounding residents by gunfire. Each attack has unfolded with Israeli forces present and no meaningful accountability — the same pattern of impunity that has emboldened settlers across the West Bank, where such assaults now occur on a near-daily basis and increasingly under the protection of the army itself.
The Vulnerable People Project urgently calls on diplomats, consuls, ambassadors, the United Nations, and international organizations to intervene immediately — to demand that Israeli forces open the gate of Deir Jarir, halt the settler assault, and guarantee the safety of residents, and to move at once to protect Taybeh and the surrounding communities from the violence now unfolding on their doorstep. There is no time for statements after the fact. The time to act is now, while the attack is still in progress.
VPP field monitoring is tracking the situation in real time and will provide further updates as information becomes available.
